Varicella zoster virus is one of the four most common causes of viral meningitis and encephalitis. Cell culture for detection of varicella in CSF lacks sensitivity. Molecular assays provide an increase in sensitivity and a faster turn-around-time compared to DFA and shell vial cell culture. VZV does reactivate later in life and produces a disease known as shingles.
